Camping In Malibu Saves Money

If camping at the beach has been a dream and staying in Malibu puts the pocket book into trauma mode, check out Leo Carrillo Campsite for a bargain. Reservations should be made seven months in advance for peak summer months but in the event of last minute attempts, check for cancellations. The park boasts 1.5 miles of beach for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, surf fishing and beachcombing. Nature walks and campfire programs as well as children’s programs occur during summer months and a small visitor center has interpretive displays.

Point Dume Promises Unsurpassed Beauty

Just south of Leo Carrillo is Point Dume. With its white sand beach and trail leading to the point, it is popular year round with surfers, rock climbers and beach goers of all ages. Climbing up and over the point, an easy hike, rewards one frequently with sightings of California sea lions, dolphins and infrequently, Matthew McConaughey. Parking requires a fee as does Zuma Beach to the north but in between are plenty of free spots especially for those arriving before noon. Lifeguards are on duty and snacks are available during summer months and on weekends.

Restaurants Abound For Hungry Beach Bums

Duke’s Malibu is a seafood restaurant where the celebrities dine so head over and check out the Sunday brunch crowd carefully. Also worth visiting is either Taverna Tony for Greek food or Marmalade Café with a menu of everything from crispy calamari to an 18oz rib eye. Both restaurants are in the center of town, near the famous celebrity homes in the Colony. Within the complex is a lovely playground for children and many shops for perusing.

Hike Solstice Canyon For The Zen Factor

If hiking to a waterfall sounds enticing, Solstice Canyon is the place. Located ¼ mile north of Pacific Coast Highway on Corral Canyon Road, this beautiful park offers freedom from the rat race for free. Correct, no entrance fee and there are miles of hiking trails, including an easy, flat and short trail leading to a waterfall. The park service only asks that everyone obey the no smoking rule as the park was severely damaged and closed in Nov. 2007 due to fire damage. After hiking Solstice head over to the Malibu Pier for lunch or check into pier fishing and lunch may turn into dinner.

Malibu offers a wealth of beauty and fun for visitors of all ages. Pack the bikini, grab the sunscreen and don’t forget the camera, that vacation at the beach is waiting to unfold.
